The successful candidate will work within the UK finance function, specifically as a key member of the local general accounting team (EFS) and reporting to an Associate Operational Controller within the team. The team is responsible for the integrity of the financial accounting and related compliance matters for the majority of the UK domiciled businesses. These responsibilities cover areas such as internal reporting, balance sheet integrity, banking, accounts payable and external reporting (audits, financial statements, taxation and other government reporting).


The intern role is a critical position within the team. The successful candidate will be given real responsibility for a number of accountant activities including month end closing and for accounts payable tasks including quality checks for offshore processing workflow, query resolution, payment requests and user training. Support and training is provided throughout. We expect her/him to take the opportunity this role presents to be a fully involved and contributing member of the finance team in a dynamic multi-national environment.


For 2019/20 year we are looking for 2 interns and at different periods during the internship the focus of may be on either financial accounting or accounts payable with each having the opportunity to experience both and achieve a good balance between these two key areas over the year.


The broader UK team includes associates based in a shared service centre in India and additional teams with responsibility over FP&A and Revenue. As part of a Global group all teams work closely within European and Market finance structures. The role will involve a high degree interaction with both onshore (UK) and offshore (India) associates across finance functions.



Core responsibilities in the role will include but not be limited to:


  • Payment initiation.
  • Accounts payable compliance and workflow management, checking and submission of compliant invoices for offshore processing, resolving exceptions with vendors and business contacts as required.
  • Accounts Payable issue resolution, including running weekly review meetings with controllers and key stakeholders.
  • Accounts payable statement reconciliation for Key vendors, working with our vendors to ensure critical accounts are kept on an accurate and timely basis.
  • Month end reporting, including preparation of monthly journals and underlying calculations for selected tasks, plus supporting the submission of figures to corporate for consolidation and the associated reporting.
  • Cash flow tracking and reporting.
  • Intercompany recharge process.
  • General ledger account reconciliation, including provision of supporting documentation and compliance reviews of completed reconciliation of selected accounts.
  • External audit, assisting with the preparation of selected schedules for audit and response to requests for information made by both internal and external auditors.
  • Preparation of Visitor tracking and various National statistics returns for UK Government reporting.
  • Record keeping/management in compliance with statutory requirements.


Role development for strong performers (having shown competence and developed a good level of ownership of core tasks):


  • Take ownership of selected higher complexity month end tasks, along with closing processes and submission of a couple of smaller entities.
  • Increased involvement in the internal and external audit cycles, interaction with audit staff.
  • Opportunity to work closely with the UK controller and Associate controllers on various Ad Hoc projects which may include areas such as process improvement work, taxation reporting and statutory returns, group entity structure & acquisitions.
  • Increased exposure to other finance teams both within UK and the broader European & Global finance communities through inclusion in wider projects and reporting matters.

A successful Finance intern will have proactively engaged with their EFS colleagues to establish a good working relationship. S/he will have contributed to the finance team through timely and accurate journals, reporting and other work, having executed on all commitments and communicated effectively with all stakeholders. Results-driven, initially s/he will have taken on Core tasks, demonstrated enthusiasm to learn and quickly built up competence to take ownership of those and contributed to the internal controls and accurate reporting of Nielsen Finance.  Following on from that core performance we would expect that s/he was then able to take on value added tasks, proactively helped us to move the performance of the team forward and developed the potential to move into other finance roles in the organisation.




We are seeking an enthusiastic intern with a passionate interest in Finance to work with our Finance team in Oxford.

Working towards a degree that heavily encompasses finance and/or accounting is preferred with some knowledge of finance being essential.
